About Megan and Michele:
I have an entrepreneurial spirit with a social justice mindset. When Mic asked me if I wanted to join forces to start Consume with Love, I jumped at the opportunity. I have a Ph.D. in Sociology and have been teaching social science courses for almost a decade. Many of my courses incorporate readings and research on issues such as unequal labor practices, environmental degradation, and social inequality. Consume with Love is partly inspired by my work in academia and my desire to change the way people buy (eat) things. I know that for me, I feel terrible if I buy a product and then find out later that the company is involved in shady practices. As a result, over the last couple of years, I have tried to be better at doing my homework and learning about how I can make better choices. I like to think that most people care about how others are treated and do not want to abuse the people who are picking their food or sewing their clothes. I also know that most of us have incredibly busy lives and do not have time to research companies to make sure they are not screwing people over. It is our hope that Consume with Love makes it easier for you to make compassionate and ethical choices when purchasing a product. I am so excited about this collection and I hope you enjoy.
My journey towards more compassionate living began in college. I studied nutrition at Cornell University and had the privilege to take a plant-based nutrition course taught by T. Colin Campbell, author of The China Study. I have been a registered dietitian for over 10 years and still promote a plant-based diet as more healthful, more ethical and more environmentally friendly than the standard American diet.
After changing to a plant-based diet, I started to become more conscious of how other actions in my life impacted the planet. I began to wonder where the clothes I bought were made. Where did the materials come from? Who made them and what were their working conditions like? I bought my first vegan handbag years ago, but this was only a small step in the right direction. It takes some research to find ethically produced, environmentally friendly products. Luckily, I have a twin sister who teaches about this topic at a university! With her help, we have been able to find amazing companies with amazing artisans for a one-stop shop marketplace where you can feel good about what you are buying. My hope is that we can make the world a little more loving, a little more compassionate and a little more beautiful.
